Ok, this is even more confusing considering that Double Dragon 2/3 ad which uses this art, but advertises the Double Dragon 2 on Gameboy which uses the Double Dragon 3 art.

Gameboy’s Double Dragon cover in Japan. I really like how this one feels like you’re in the middle of an action scene, and implies what’s about to happen, instead of just showing a thug getting actively kicked in the face.

Later attempts went even more realistic. It seems that ultimately, it just never caught on over here like it did in Japan. Makes me wonder if it would have done better if they went with a more cartoony feel like Mario.
